The son of a "steel hauling" man by trade, Steve Williams learned the fundamentals from his father. Born in 1953, Williams grew up in a small Missouri town where he took his father's lessons to heart. In 1975, he went to work for Steel Haulers, leading their operations in Little Rock, Arkansas.
After Steel Haulers introduced structural changes in 1980, Williams saw the opportunity to move on and start his own company. With only one truck, he went into business for himself, forming Maverick Transportation with co-worker and friend Larry Leahy.
Thousands of loads later and countless miles covered, Williams is now 100% owner of Maverick USA Inc. While becoming a leader in the industry, Williams has been and remains actively involved in the trucking community, establishing a strong reputation for himself and Maverick. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Arkansas Trucking Association, served a three-term role as Chairman of the Arkansas Trucking Association, and was Chairman of the American Trucking Associations in 2005. Additionally, Williams sat on the Executive Committee of the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies and currently acts as Chairman of the American Transportation Research Institute.
